I am not familiar with all of the terminology, so please bear with me. If you have not watched a state cheerleading competition, you should. They are very exciting and entertaining. I was perusing youtube and came across a few videos showing live bands in high school. Some of these bands are really good and I started wondering if I’d see any of them in concert someday after graduation. Live girls and guys performing their own music somewhere across that country. Music programs teacha wide range of skills and disciplines to our youth. Music education provides our youth with social skills, venues for self expression, art appreciation and discipline. Music ties people together. There is a science and skill to reading, understanding and playing sheet music. Additional skill comes in when you translate sheet music to beautiful art for your listening pleasure. Aside from the academic skills, learning to appreciate music and to feel it is priceless. This is compounded when you consider the interaction and cooperation needed to meld multiple people and instruments into a band, harmonization, melodies and lyrics. In a band, you need to work with people, deal with different personalities and learn cooperation and compromise. There is definitely a lot of value in high school music education programs. Please take time to get involved and support these programs in the school systems near you.
